Trade Plate Applications
If you are part of categories, such as registered manufacturers, builders or importers, motor transport contractors, motor dealers or financial institutions, Trade Plates are used to operate unregistered or unlicensed vehicles on a public road in South Africa.

In order to apply for trade plates, you must have a motor trade permit number:
- BRNC Certificate
- Company Proxy Identity Document copy (original size)
- Complete and bring along MTN1
What is a motor trade number?
It is a permit/number, authorizing certain institutions, and businesses to drive unregistered and licensed vehicles on public roads, whilst complying with regulations of the Law.
Authorized businesses operate unregistered/licensed vehicles on public roads in the course of their business activities. Such activities include:
- Selling the vehicle
- Exchanging the vehicle
- Repairing the vehicle
- Delving the vehicle to clients
These businesses can apply for motor trade numbers in order to obtain trade plates.
Who is eligible?
- motor transport contractor who delivers motor vehicle's
- motor dealer to deliver, sell, exchange or repair a motor vehicle
- manufacturer or builder to deliver or test a motor vehicle
- an importer to deliver a motor vehicle
The applicant must apply for a motor trade number and then license the motor trade number. For example, if you sell vehicles, you can use trade licence plates to allow your customers to test drive vehicles on the public road.
